Fairway Bunker Renovation

The fairway bunker renovation is well under way. We have actually completed six of the sixteen fairways bunkers bunkers that we are renovating. The renovation consists of removing the old sand, installing new drainage, installing a liner and replenishing with new sand. The sand we are using is consistent with the greenside bunkers. We are hoping to have this project completed by our deadline of December 15th.

Driving Range Improvements

In an effort to improve our practice facility and your overall driving range experience, we recently added three target greens and renovated the chipping area at the driving range. The three target greens are placed at 100yds, 125yds and 150yds from the teeing area.

On the chipping area, we enlarge the chipping green, decreased the size of the bunker and created a chipping area where golfers can practice chipping from fairway height and rough height turf conditions.

Vertical Mowing

Vertical mowing, verticutting or dethatching is the process in which special reels are used to cut or slice into the turf to remove thatch.
Vertical mowing reel

Poa Annua is a very fast growing plant, which consequently produces a lot of thatch. Our greens consist of around 80% Poa Annua and 20% Bentgrass. So, in order to control thatch in our greens we try to verticut at least twice a month during the growing season. By removing the thatch, this allows for better penetration of water, oxygen and nutrients to get into the root zone where the plant can absorb these things. Furthermore, removing the thatch provides a better putting surface. Because excess thatch causes the greens to be spongy, bumpy and slow, removing the thatch creates a smoother, firmer and faster putting surface.

Cleanup after verticutting
As you can see, verticutting removes a lot of thatch and plant material. Verticutting is a slow process due to the amount of plant material that has to be cleaned off the green afterwards, but is a necessary cultural practice that helps produce the best possible putting surface

Spraying for pests!

Believe it or not, we are already starting to see a number of broadleaf weeds emerge and so we have begun spraying for them.

Also, in a continuing effort to limit the amount of geese on the golf course, we are experimenting with a liquid goose repellent. Our target area is around the lake on hole #18. We will be monitoring this area over the next few days to determine the effectiveness of the repellent.

Golf Course Update for January 11, 2012-Carts Off of The Path!

We have frost this morning. So, we will have a 10am shotgun start. However, something new and exciting will be different starting today as far as the golf cart rules for the golf course. Starting today, we are allowing all golf carts off of the path. You will be able to drive your cart off the path on all of the holes, except the par 3's and Holes #1, 10 and 18. On the holes that you will be allowed to drive off of the cart path, there will be a designated entry point and exit point (marked by a white stake with a green top for entry and a white stake with a red top for exit). We ask that you enter and exit the cart path at these designated areas only and remain off of the path in between these two stakes. We also ask that, while you are driving your cart along the fairway or rough, you fill all divots using the divot mix bottles provided on the golf carts. By allowing carts off of the path, we are hoping to accomplish several things. First and foremost, we are hoping to make your golf round more enjoyable. We also expect to see the pace of play improve, all divots filled and less damage from golf carts by entering and exiting only where designated by the entry/exit stakes. We are very excited about these changes and feel that this will really increase the enjoyment and value of your golfing experience at Crow Canyon Country Club.
Enter fairway just passed the white stake with the green top.  Note:  The green tops will be here in a week so the white entry stake has a green stake in front of it for now.

Exit Fairway just before the white stake with the red top.
