December 15, 2011 Course Update

We finally received some much needed precipitation. The rainy conditions this morning also kept the frost away. So, there will be no delays today. Some of the damaged we experienced from the high winds last week was the loss of sand in our bunkers. We recently purchased 100 tons of sand to replenish our green side bunkers. We will be spending the next week refilling the green side bunkers with sand. Thank you for your patience during this process as the bunkers we are working in will be marked Ground Under Repair.

December 9, 2011 Frost Delay

We have a frost delay this morning. There will be a 10am shotgun. This will allow us to mow greens, change cups and rake bunkers before play begins.

December 8, 2011 Update

A week after the wind storms and we are still working on cleaning up the debris left behind. However, we have also been taking advantage of the dry weather and frost delays in the mornings to repair cart paths.

This is just one of many areas of the cart paths in need of repair. We will continue to make these type of repairs throughout the winter season as the weather permits.

I just wanted to pass along that Chris Souza, Assistant Golf Professional, will not be working in the Pro Shop today because He and his wife Sarah are at the hospital eagerly awaiting the arrival of their second daughter. Crow Canyon golf course update

As expected, we had high winds the last two days. Consequently, the damage and the overall mess the winds left behind is very significant. Luckily, there was no major property damage other than the loss of several trees, limbs the size of small trees, leaves and other debris. However, the cleanup could possibly take a week to complete. So, thank you for your patience during this cleanup period as some of the normal routine maintenance of the golf course will fall behind. Our goal is to get the course in the best possible playing condition for the weekend. This means we will be focusing our efforts in the high traffic areas first, such as, greens, bunkers, fairways and tees. The roughs and outer perimeters of the golf course will be cleaned last. You will be able to take relief with no penalty if your ball comes to rest near an immovable object that is not normally supposed to be there. For instance, if your ball rests near a fallen tree limb and you are unable to move the limb, you may take relief. On a positive note, the wind helped to dry the wet areas of the golf course. So, the conditions should be much firmer and more consistent throughout the golf course. The weather is looking better for the weekend. Have a great weekend of golf!

 

Severe weather warning!

Looking at the 5-day weather forecast, it appears we are going to have high winds today and tomorrow. This means that, over the next couple of days, my staff will be prepared to be cleaning up leaves and other debris throughout the golf course. Then, starting Friday and moving into the weekend, we are expected to have sunny skies with the high temperatures in the low 60's. However, the low temperatures will be in the high 30's, which means we will most likely see some frost on the golf course in the mornings. So, be prepared for possible frost delays beginning Friday and on into the weekend. If we do have frost, we will have a shotgun start at 9am at the earliest. Hopefully, this wind storm will drop the rest of the leaves out of the trees and this will be our last major cleanup of leaves for the year. We have been working hard to keep the course manicured and in great condition. Other than the leaves and the wet areas that we have marked as Ground Under Repair, the course is in outstanding shape!

Disease control

With the cool, moist and overcast weather we have been having, we are experiencing high disease pressure on the greens. Some greens, depending on their location, will experience higher disease pressure than others. For instance, Hole #9 green is very shaded this time of the year, therefore does not get as much sun as the rest of the greens. So, this green tends to retain more moisture, creating an environment for disease. In order to combat the disease, we are on a preventive fungicide program. There are times when more needs to be done to help fight the disease. For instance, solid-tine aeration helps in opening up the greens to allow airflow down through the root system. This will help in drying out the surface as well as the first few inches below the surface. Hole # 9 seems to be the green, at this point, with the most disease pressure. So, we are aerating it today with solid needle tines. This should not affect the roll too much, but you will notice the holes in the green.

You might have noticed some damaged areas like this on the golf course. This is very minor damage and is not a serious problem at Crow Canyon C.C.. This video will explain the cause and solution to this problem. Have a great weekend!

There is no frost today due to the overcast skies and slightly warmer temperatures. We do have a small chance of showers, but other than that, it should be a great day for golf. The golf course is in excellent shape! So, hopefully, you will take advantage of the great Fall conditions and get out and play some golf today.

We will have another frost delay for the second straight morning. During the frosty mornings when we are unable to mow and perform our daily set up of the golf course, we catch up on other detail work, such as, cart path edging. The bad news is that we have heavy frost and so there will be a frost delay until 9am. We will have a 9am shotgun start this morning.

Drainage and Cart Path Repair

As promised, we are starting to tackle some of the minor projects that need to be done on the golf course. Here are a couple of repairs that we were working on yesterday and will be finishing up today. First, we repaired a couple of nasty pot holes on Hole #2 cart path.

We also worked on a couple of drainage issues that we were having. One of the repairs was on Hole# 1.

 The other repair was on Hole #18. Fortunately, when we rerouted the cart path on #18 this summer, we installed a pipe underneath the cart path, just in case we created a drainage issue in this area.

We will continue to work on projects such as these throughout the winter months, as well as, tree trimming and irrigation improvements.

Perfect Timing!

Happy Friday everyone! I just love free water! We received around .15" of rain last night and this morning. It couldn't have come at a better time since we spent the last two days fertilizing the entire golf course.

With this rain and the rain that is forecasted over the next week, we are able to turn off our irrigation, hopefully, for the rest of the year. Now, we will begin to focus our attention on winter projects such as tree trimming, drainage and irrigation projects. Of course, I will keep you up to date on everything that is going on. A Calm Day in West Texas!

Yesterday reminded me of a calm day growing up in my home town of Lubbock, Texas. However, one might think a small tornado passed through the town of Danville, CA last night from all of the debris and broken branches that are on the golf course this morning. Be assured that my staff will be working tirelessly to cleanup the mess that was left behind from the high winds we experienced yesterday. We hope to have the course cleaned up and back to "normal" by this weekend. Thank you for your patience over the next couple of days as some of the routine maintenance and detail work may fall behind while we work to remove the leaves and broken branches from the golf course.
